We stopped by this classic Texas cafe recently and had a mixed experience. The service, atmosphere and main food was really good. I had a salad & my husband had chicken fried steak. The Cobb salad had all of the fixings in generous portions, but the rectangular plate it was served on made it impossible to mix up. Why do restaurants do this? It makes for a pretty presentation, but isn’t practical when eating. Food just ends up sliding off onto the table. My husbands chicken fried steak was the lunch portion and it was a dinner size portion. He loved it. After lunch, we decided to try some of the pie since this joint seems very proud of their pies. The selection was large. I picked the chocolate silk pie, my husband picked banana pudding. Both were really really disappointing. The pie wasn’t a chocolate silk pie in any stretch of the imagination. It was clearly whipped cream mixed with chocolate cocoa. It didn’t even have much of a chocolatey taste. It was a generous portion, for sure, but wasn’t the pie I was expecting. The same was true of my husband’s banana pudding. It wasn’t really pudding. It was banana flavored whipped cream…very disappointing. The picture shows what I’m talking about. Perhaps some of their other pies are better. We’ll give this place another try & hope the dessert is better this time.
It is a very traditional Texas place, love the tow ish atmosphere in the way that it feels you are in a old fashion town, walk around there are more restaurants and shops. We order a club sandwich, I was looking to try the chicken pot pie it was sold out, but I decided to go the onion liver which I love but just because I know how to prepare it, you know Italian family traditions, anyway we good it just ok. On the other hand the pies are the best deal of the place, we asked for a lemon merengue and a Texas coffee cake both were amazing!. The service was good
From the moment I walked in ot took 10- 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge me. The fried green tomatoes were great. I ordered fried catfish w/ fried okra and mashed potatoes with cream gravy. Everything was cold except the fish. And when ready to leave took 15 minutes looking for someone to give me check.
